Welcome to the second part of the Graniitti Insights series!

In the second part of the series, we get to know more about Päivi Williams, Graniit's experienced test manager. Read below what role the test manager has in terms of project success:

1. How long have you been with Graniitti?

- More than 4 and a half years.

2. What has been the best thing about working at Graniitti?

- Nice co-workers, open and relaxed atmosphere and good management. In addition, I have been involved in various interesting and suitable customer projects.

3. What do you enjoy doing in your free time the most?

- I go outside with my dog, go camping and spend time with friends.

4. Describe your role as a test manager?

- I work as a testing manager in a customer organization, where I am responsible for the customer's acceptance testing. I guide and advise business experts in practical testing work. In addition, my work often includes communication between different stakeholders and suppliers, as well as the investigation of possible problem situations. The job description also includes the creation and creation of the project's testing strategy and testing processes (total testing plan) and the development of existing models.

5. What are the key responsibilities in your role?

- My job is to create optimal frameworks and opportunities for customers to perform acceptance testing as efficiently and smoothly as possible. In addition, I am responsible for the transparency of the project's testing work, I regularly report on the progress and provide relevant information about the testing results for the project.

6. What are the most common challenges in your role, and how do you overcome them?

- Often, the time required for testing work cannot be estimated in advance and the estimates are often low.. Since everything can never be tested, attention must always be paid to prioritization during testing. Testing is thought to be (too) often a part of the project, which happens at the end of the project. However, testing is a sub-area, which should be taken into account as an integral part for each phase of the project. Challenges are often overcome by increasing transparency, communicating and preparing with a good and comprehensive test plan.

7. What kind of role does the test manager have in terms of the success of the projects?

- The role of the test manager is essential for the success of the projects, and it requires close cooperation with almost all parties of the project. The most important thing is open and uncomplicated cooperation and communication. The task of the test manager is to communicate openly about possible challenges and together with the project team create working test models.

8. How do you monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the testing process and improve it?

- I use a variety of different tools and testing management tools. By analyzing the information produced by these tools, we can often identify development targets and make improvements to processes. However, the most important thing is to actively monitor the situation and listen to all those participating in the testing in order to understand their experiences and views. If something or a problem prevents the smooth progress of testing, removing that blockage is the first thing on your work list.

9. What do you enjoy the most about your role?

-Communicating with different people, working together and learning as well as developing new testing processes and guiding practical testing work.
